The North Louisiana Geocachers
would like to invite everyone out to a fun-filled movie night. We
are holding an event at the historic Fiske Theater located in Oak
Grove, LA. Showtime starts at 7:30 so we need to be there a little
earlier, probably around 7 P.M. to make sure we get our popcorn,
drinks, etc. The staff will also be giving us a tour, but this may
be after the movie. We plan to seat all of our group (it'll hold
250) in the balcony section of this theater. Since so many of us
have grown up with the multiplex theaters, this should be a treat,
to experience how it used to be in the golden age of movies. The
Fiske Theater is still setup the way it originally was, with ticket
booth, concession stand, marquee, original seating, etc. Make sure
to bring your children with you, so they can also see how mom and
dad (or grandma and granddad) used to see a movie. The movie
playing that night will be Shrek--The Final Chapter. The Fiske
Theater is very reasonable on ticket and concession prices. Tickets
are $5.50 for adults and $3.00 for children. Concession prices are
even less than that.
We also plan to meet down the road earlier in the
evening at Mike's Catfish House at 5:15 PM for dinner, before going
to the movie. The coordinates to Mikes are N32 50.570 W091 25.577.
If you can't make dinner, then just come on down to the Fiske for a
fun evening with friends and family. Bring anyone with you, who
might enjoy a night out at the movies. They don't necessarily have
to be geocachers. However, we are also planning to place out
several movie themed geocaches to commemorate this event in the
time leading up to it.
Now for some biographical information about the
great Fiske Theater:
The Fiske Theatre was opened
in April 1928, and at the time was one of the premier state of the
art movie cinemas in Northeast Louisiana. It was owned and operated
by the late Donald Fiske of Oak Grove. The Fiske Theatre was a two
level cinema with a first floor that seated 500 people and a
balcony that seats 250, as well as a cry room located on the back
of the first floor for mothers with small children. The Fiske
Theatre was rebuilt in 1950 and relocated from just down main
street to it's current location, and was operated continously by
the Fiske Family until 1987 as a first run
cinema.
In 1987 as Mr. Fiske's health
began to fail him the theatre was donated to the West Carroll
Chamber of Commerce where it has been used mainly for gospel music
concerts and other community events since then. The theatre is in
very good condition thanks to the hard work of the chamber and
numerous grants for upkeep from the Louisiana State Legislature.
After a two-month renovation period in the fall of 2008, the Fiske
Theatre returned as a first run movie theatre on December 15, 2008
with a showing of "Fireproof". The theatre is now open each weekend
(in it's original condition) showing a different first run feature
film each week on the biggest screen (18'x33') in Northeast
Louisiana. DTS Surround sound was added February
2010.
Come on out and have a great time at the movies.
It is air-conditioned, which is a good thing being the middle of
June in Louisiana.
