LA BATTERIE DE FORT PÉNINSULE
Durant la Seconde Guerre mondiale, des sous-marins allemands longent les côtes gaspésiennes. La baie de Gaspé, située à l’entrée du fleuve, devient une cible stratégique pour l’ennemi. L’armée canadienne réagit à la menace dès 1941 en établissant une base navale à Sandy Beach (Gaspé). Le nord de la baie de Gaspé est alors fortifié avec la construction de Fort Péninsule. En plus de protéger le port, ce site assure la défense d’une autre base navale près de Gaspé : celle de Fort-Ramsay, qui est à l’époque une des plus importantes de la côte Est canadienne.
Au plus fort de l’occupation de Fort Péninsule, la garnison compte près de 220 militaires. Outre deux chambres fortes pour munitions et deux casemates munies de canons et reliées entre elles par quelque mille pieds de tunnels, la base de Fort Péninsule est alors équipée de puissants projecteurs balayant de leurs faisceaux l’entrée de la baie de Gaspé sur toute sa largeur. De plus, un filet anti-sous-marin est tendu entre Penouille et Sandy Beach.

THE FORT PENINSULA BATTERY
During the Second World War, German submarines sailed along the Gaspé coast, threatening allied shipping on the St. Lawrence. Gaspé Bay, located at the mouth to the river, became a strategic target for the enemy. As early as 1941, the Canadian Armed Forces reacted to the threat by establishing a naval base in Gaspé (at Sandy Beach). Fort Peninsula was built to fortify the north side of Gaspé Bay. Not only was it to protect Gaspé harbour, Fort Peninsula would also serve to defend Fort Ramsay naval base, near Gaspé, one of the most important naval bases on Canada’s east coast at the time.
At peak occupation, the garrison reached nearly 220 strong. In addition to the two bunkers with their artillery guns, shell magazines and several thousand feet of connecting tunnels, Fort Peninsula was equipped with powerful projectors that swept the mouth of the bay from side to side with their far-reaching beams. Below the surface of the water, an antisubmarine net spanned the mouth of the inner bay from Penouille to Sandy Beach.
