The rather unmaintained sign at the entrance to Maungakaretu Reserve unfortunately does not invite inspection. In fact it is a lovely picnic and swimming area, and the walk to the cache is through some delightful bush, mostly tawa.
From the entrance (WP) follow a short track to the open paddock, cross it at its lowest point and then take a lightly used track through the bush along a ridge. You will then need to drop down to a small stream which is easy to cross. From here you are very close to the tall kahikatea with complex roots and you can begin your hunt! See spoiler photo in the gallery. The cache is 1 litre sistema plastic container.
