To commemorate (or more likely lament) the occasion of my
30-year high school reunion in 2010, let me take you back in
time... all the way back to 1980 and my senior year at Oxnard High
School. This is the site of the “real” Oxnard High
School, not the site of that poser OHS replacement school a few
miles northwest of here that they built a few years back. Oxnard
Union High School existed here on 5th Street in various different
forms since the early 1920’s. And now it’s largely
demolished, potentially to be repurposed into a city park with only
a couple of the original structures still remaining.
Oh sure, that new OHS is bigger and fancier and all that, but
this is the one that is the source of memories for generations of
Oxnarders. This is the one that shows up in the history books. This
is the one that while walking its hallways you could smell the
asbestos and see the peeling lead-based paint, and that’s
really something! That’s the layers of history!
So join me on my little journey back in time as I bring you back
to the Oxnard High School of the late 1970’s!
I leafed through the OHS Class of 1980 yearbook for the first
time in 3 decades in preparation for setting this cache. It brought
back a flood of memories - some of them happy, many of them
dreadful. I hope you people appreciate the effort I went through to
bring you this cache, and the resulting damage it did to my psyche!
;-)
Rock On, OHS Class of 1980!
**** Congrats to GaggleFamily on the FTF, and thanks for the
info on fellow OHSer Mrs. Gaggle! ****
