Who Put a Road Here? Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

sandlanders: It has now been many years since County J was reconstructed, and even the most outdated maps and autorouters probably don't have the "old" County J route shown anymore. In fact, most locals don't even ask anymore, "Who put a road here?" But we have kept this cache in play, and Mr. Sandlanders has enjoyed checking on this hide about twice a week in all but the coldest months when he rides his bicycle right by GZ, where he often stops to take water breaks. However, he has other hides of ours that he sometimes rides by, so he will keep reporting on those after this one is gone.

We thank those who visited this cache and who took the time to read the cache page and learn why we brought people to this location. We also thank those who let us know by one means or another when this cache needed attention by the COs, and we tried to be quick about maintenance visits because this cache often got found when people were hitting the mini-power trail farther east on County J. (They also often thought this was part of that series, even though this cache predates that.)

Caches that have low D/T ratings are rated that way because they have that difficulty and/or terrain level, not because they are of lower quality or are interchangeable with others of similar ratings. We take care with all of the caches we place, but sometimes the physical and/or emotional work to maintain them becomes too much for us, and it's time to let them go. After over eight years, it's time to let this one go.

Geocache Description:

Looking for a film canister. May or may not be winter friendly, depending on the snow amount.
This cache is NOT part of another cacher's (sanddogg's) Highway J series.

If you were at this spot in 2007 or earlier, you would be standing in the middle of a farmer's field. It might have been planted in corn or in clover, or his Belgian horses may have been grazing here. In fact, this spot may still show up on some maps as being located in the middle of a field. All that changed the following year.

2008 was the first of three years of the reconstruction of County Highway J from the Village of Friendship in the west to County Highway G in the east. Eleventh Avenue awkwardly and unsafely intersected with the two sharp existing curves of Highway J at that time, so the farm field was purchased, and Highway J was rerouted into the more gentle curves you see now. Eleventh Avenue meets J more directly, and all of the intersections are much safer. There is even a dedicated biking lane from this point into town.
