Overlooking the lake is Evitts Mountain, name for on the the first settlers in Allegany County. Local legend asserts that sometime in the early 1730's, Mr. Evitts left the civilized life of Frederick County Maryland after a disastrous love affair and moved to the Wilderness of Allegany County. He built a cabin on the mountain that now bears his name. Some evidence of this settlement remains on the mountain top and can be seen by hiking the Evitts Mountain Homesite Trail. The rock hop down into the canyon on the Evitts Homesite Trail and find yourself surrounded by Hemlock, Laurel and Rhodondendron. Then cross the small cascading stream on the footbridge and begin the climb. This is an ambitious trail that climbs 1,000 ft in elevation in 2.5 miles. Plan to take water and spend a couple of hours. A great hike for those willing to take the challenge.
Directions: From Washington DC Take I - 270 North approximately 30 miles to I -70 west. Take I - 70 west approximately 60 miles to I - 68 west approximately 40 miles to Rocky Gap State Park to exit 50.

Take I - 279 south to I - 79 south (Washington, Pa), to I - 68 East (Morgantown WV) and fallow I - 68 east for approximately 78 miles.
