Calgary Area Cachers teaming up with The City of Calgary Parks
Celebrating Calgary Parks 100th Anniversary!

The Calgary Parks 100 Project is a partnership between the City of Calgary Parks, and the Calgary Area Cachers to celebrate Calgary Parks 100th anniversary. Calgary Parks has supplied cache containers and swag for 100 caches, and we have placed these 100 caches in 100 parks around Calgary. These caches have some cool swag and trackables when placed, so make sure to find them as soon as they are published.

Northeast Calgary’s first major park, Prairie Winds Park opened in 1990. Once decision was made to put in a new park, the City Parks and Recreation department faced the formidable task of building a park on a piece of land that was flat and almost featureless. In a feat of architectural landscaping, hills and a creek were sculpted into the site. The summit of the highest hill, which rises 30 meters, offers one of the most panoramic views of the city with views of the mountains, the downtown core.

The flight pathways of the Calgary International Airport pass directly overhead. At dusk, this is one of the most thrilling places in town to watch planes land and lights sparkle. On a snowy winter day, the hill is transformed into a toboggan run.

The pathways in Prairie Winds Park are Wide and easily travelled. The main pathway runs past the soccer pitch, and home plate of the baseball diamond, and along the bottom of the largest of the parks engineered hills which is used as a toboggan run in winter. After a sharp jog east, then northeast, the pathway travels thru MacEwan grove. After turning east, the pathway travels past a large parks storage and maintenance yard and connects to the north parking lot. It winds around the large playground south of the tennis courts, the spray pool and the concession/washroom building. Several connecting pathways also wrap around the creek and the picnic shelter area before the main pathway returns to the south parking lot.
