This cache is part of a series (initiated by BakRdz) intended to showcase Wisconsin’s Rustic Roads (WRR). The Wisconsin Legislature established the Rustic Roads program in 1973 to preserve what remains of Wisconsin's scenic, lightly traveled roads. For a current listing of Wisconsin Rustic Roads, check out this web page.
These caches are usually hidden in the right of way at a spot of notable beauty with no bushwhacking required. Please be respectful of private property, protected lands, and the overall history of the area. Take your time, mind your speed, and most of all… enjoy your journey along the road less traveled.
This particular cache is a camoed matchstick holder hidden along Agency House Road (WRR 069) in Columbia County. There is a slight pullover area near the cache to park. The hide is not next to the road or the water, nor is it near the wooden platform. The .75-mile drive takes you on paved surfaces along the Portage Canal to the the Historic Agency House. There is a park at the end of the road where you can explore the area more fully and also access two other geocaches: GCTQXD and GC12CMK. (As of late 2020 both of these long-time hides are now archived.)
From the WRR web site: "R69 travels along the historic Portage Canal. On one side of the road are wetlands which serve as a habitat for sandhill cranes, blue heron, and many other birds. The road leads to the historic Indian Agency House. Built in 1832, the house is open to the public. The northeast end of the road connects with the Marquette Trail. One can also view the remnants of the Old Fort Winnebago Locks. This canal joined the Fox and Wisconsin Rivers, making travel by water possible for the first time from Green Bay to the Gulf of Mexico."
