Geocache Description:

In the Charlton Pond Nature Reserve

Billingham lives in the shadow of the old ICI chemical works, much good work has been done by the local authority and nature trusts to improve the environment and to allow nature to thrive .

In the 19th century, this land was owned by the Dean and Chapter of Durham Cathedral. They leased it to a brick making company which extracted clay from the soil. After the area had been given over to housing this part was made into an amenity with ponds which are well stocked with fish and there is an abundance of wild birds and plants.

The reserve is certainly accessible to wheelchair and pushchair users. However, crossing the rough land to the cache may prove to be a challenge.

Health Warning: in summer, the nettles are vicious. Wear long trousers and long sleeves!
