Geocache Description:

All trail users must check in at The Inn at Shaker Village front desk or ticket booth each day to sign a waiver of liability and check out a gate key. Please observe and respect this and all other trail guidelines when visiting.

From the brochure The Trails of Shaker Village:

1826 RIVER ROAD TRAIL

Follow the grravel village road to the east end of the village, cross US 68 (very carefully) and follow the paved River Road approximately one fourth mile. Look for the trail marker on the left side of the road, and take the steps where the trail follows an old roadbed built by the Shakers in 1826 to Shaker Landing. As you walk this prtion of the trail, imagine stagecoaches and wagons filled with passengers traveling along this narrow road, Your descent of 400 feet into the Kentucky River Gorge will you through millions of years of geoloogic history.

At Shaker Landing you will see the historic High Bridge which spans the Kentucky River, foundations of Shaker buildings, and the restored timber frame stable and and interpretive center. The sternwheeler, Dixie Belle, cruises the Kentucky River from its dock at Shaker Landing.

You return to the village by (a) using the same trail, or (b) walking the paved road originally built by the Shakers in 1861. The trail is beautiful at any time of year, but is quite majestic in the spring, when the hills are carpeted with patchwork of showy wildflowers. Use caution where the trail parallels cliff areas.

Trail length: 3 miles round trip. Moderate due to elevation change.

ABOUT THE CACHE

The cache is a small, camouflaged plastic container with log and room for small trade items. As always, bring your own writing instrument.

The cache is near where the trail transitions from the road to the walking path. The cache is located along a stone wall but there is no need to disturb the stonework.
