This a multi cache with a difficulty level of 4. You’ll need a bit of stamina and sound footing, and there is the potential for danger in discovering some of the hides. You will find yourself on unmarked, lightly trodden trails, with some extraordinary scenery and exceptional views of the beautiful Southington Valley. Park at the posted coodinates.
The Southernmost spur of the Tunxis Trail ascends from the base of the Southington Mountain and meanders along just beyond the ridgeline. Feeder trails come in from Wolcott, Southington and Bristol and the area is abundant with historic foundations, breathtaking vistas and a bevy of Geocaches. The first half-mile of path is along the Sportsmen’s Association boundary. There is a firing range to the north, so don’t stray from the blue blazes in this area. The next half mile is narrow and winding, sometimes with a low, leafy canopy in the summer and rocky underfoot. Either side is flanked by an impenetrable screen of Mountain Laurel so be mindful of your surroundings as the bear sightings are not infrequent around here, and bushwhacking is not an option for escape. After a mile, the forest opens to a dirt road and the Tunxis Trail veers to the left. Your quest will take you off the marked trail at this point, but the paths are well worn and, where they are not, just follow the rocks along the ridge.
