Geocache Description:

UPDATE ..... When you are searching for stage 2 of this cache - please stay along the creek bed .... many cachers are tresspassing on the private property/camp area which borders the creek. The trail that goes behind the cache is private property as well - Please don't use that trail - stay along the creek.
Please don't spoil this cache for others as I will have to archive it if cachers continue to tresspass.

I hope you are enjoying the Seaway Trail. This cache is a 2 stage multi/mystery. For stage one you will park at the Daniel Reid Memorial Pier where you will be able to see the lighthouse. If you are into Benchmarks, be sure to look them up before you visit this cache as there are several at the pier and the lighthouse is one as well.

Here is a bit of history on the Barcelona Lighthouse: In 1928 Congress appropriated $5,000.00 for building a lighthouse in Portland Harbor – now Barcelona. One of the oldest structures of its kind on Lake Erie, this lighthouse is constructed of the local beach stone with 2 foot thick walls. The lighthouse stands forty feet high with a base diameter of twenty two feet. It was built in response to the opening of the Erie Canal and the increased traffic that would travel this area.
What makes the lighthouse so unique is the fact that it was powered by natural gas. This was the first Lighthouse in the world to be powered by natural gas. A nearby pocket of natural gas was found under a creek bed; the gas was then piped to the lighthouse to power the lantern.
The lighthouse had only two keepers. The first was Joshua Lane who served from 1829 to 1855. The second was Thomas Taylor who served from 1855 to 1859 when the lighthouse was decommissioned because Barcelona did not possess a harbor. The lighthouse was then sold at auction to a private party in 1872. It is still privately owned today and the beacon remains lit by gas courtesy of its owner and the Town of Westfield which pays for the gas.
There is no need to trespass on the private property of the lighthouse to find the answer you seek.

You will need to replace the letters in this coordinate to find the final stage.

N 42 20.AAB W 079 35.BCA

The coords at the top of the page are correct; start your search there. When you arrive at the coordinates look up, you will see a root system with several trees growing out of it. Use these trees to get the final coordinates.

Count the number of trees growing out of the root system that have been cut off and replace the A's with this number.
Count the total number of trees growing out of the root system and multiply that times 3 and replace the B's with this number.
Count the total number of trees growing out of the root system that have not been cut off and add 4; replace the C with this number.
You now have what you need to go find the cache. Enjoy your walk along the creek. I did not get my feet wet while placing the cache, but that is not to say you won't get yours wet while hunting for it. Hope the water is low!! Have fun.
