Geocache Description:

This cache is located on the Koolau Summit Trail, approximately halfway between the Laie and Poamoho summits.

This is another amazing adventure on the Koolau Summit Trail. Two ways to the cache, either from the Laie Trail or the Poamoho trail. As far as I know the Castle trail is closed.

This cache was placed on the 1st day of a 22 mile backpacking trip that started from Laie and ended in Wahiawa. You don’t need to go to Wahiawa, for most Poamoho would be a good out. I’ve read about people doing this in a day, but you had better be sure of your skills and the trail, not a place you would want to be caught in the dark. To cross this 6.5 mile section of the KST, it took the 3 of us a little over 10 hours on the trail, so make sure you have enough water. If you start at Laie, at least when you reach Poamoho, there is a water source. If you intend to camp on the trail, Ball’s “The Backpackers Guide to Hawaii” may give you some tips. Once you past the “Heli-pad”, the next(and maybe only) good place to pitch tent on the trail is at the junction of the Castle Trail. We made the mistake of pushin’ on to Poamoho and when 6:30pm came around, we lucked out and found a spot that barely fit the tent. We had enough water to hold us to Poamoho.

Strong recommendation to plan for 2 days. Like the saying goes about the KST: “
Expect the worst and you may be pleasantly surprised.

The route from Laie to Wahiawa (you can use Poamoho to make it easier)

Sure, he looks happy now!

The sun goes down, get that tent up!

Always hike with a partner and let someone know your plan.
This was a pretty rough section of the KST, with a lot of vegetation, making it difficult to find the trail. We lost the trail several times, finding ourselves going off on a different ridgeline. If the summit is socked in, the whiteout conditions make it even worst. It was nice to have the route loaded into the GPS. Definitely a challenge, but a great experience.
Mahalo to the others on this hike: Lost1605, and BC.
