Rosa #5 : Stangeland Mølle Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

cervisvenator: Hi

While I feel that Geocaching.com should hold the location for the cache owner and block other cachers from placing a cache in the area around this cache for a reasonable amount of time, we can’t do so forever.

Nothing seems to happen with this cache listing, so it is now archived, so that someone else can place a cache in the area, and geocachers can once again enjoy visiting this location. Also, if it hasn’t been done already, please pick up any remaining cache bits as soon as possible.

If the owner wants it reopened, send me an e-mail and I’ll be happy to unarchive the cache listing if it still satisfies the requirement/guidelines.

(This reviewer note is in English so non-Norwegian cache owners, geocachers and cache reviewers can understand what it says.)

Thanks for your understanding,

SINCE 1846

In what is currently the busy Oalsgata in Sandnes, the Oalsbekken Stream once flowed freely. The water came from a spring (Oalskjelda) that ensured a steady flow of water throughout the year. Mills had operated here since long before 1846, but it was in this year Olaus Aareskjold established the village mill with oats from local farmers.
Fire! Fire!

There is a lot of drama in Stangeland Mølle’s history. The mills were fire bombs. Hot, dry and dusty. The mill burnt down in both 1921 and 1924. The current building was originally erected in 1927. And even though nearly everything has been refurbished, the old wooden floor is still in place.

The stone mill of 1927

In 1927 a new stone mill arrived from Germany at the mill in the middle of Sandnes. The mill is still in use, even though its capacity is somewhat limited. Only a small mill such as Stangeland can use equipment that produces such small volumes. However, combined with new machines with top performance, the mill does have a mission. It safeguards the identity and represents quality. Grain milled using the stone mill has higher nutritional value than e.g. sifted flour.

Once a year

The old mill has to be ground at regular intervals. For many years grandfather Aareskjold’s brother came to oversee the grinding. He had to make sure the next generations had an eye for the pattern of the stones and that everything remained the same as before. Mindful professionals ensure that the grain is properly milled.

Fifth generation

With the exception of a year’s break in the 80s, our family has operated the mill up to the present. At the end of the 90s Marianne reported for service. Hege arrived in 2005, and Stangeland Mølle could note a new Aareskjold generation
