Geocache Description:

"Weir is the cache" can be found at a weir on the north side of the river Liffey in an area known as the Strawberry Beds in Dublin 15. Parking is available at The Wren's Nest pub located on the R109, this road is quite busy so take care if walking.

The weir is a very popular location during sunny days where people come to fish, kayak and swim, so beware of muggles!

Follow the path to the left heading downstream. The cache itself is a small brown lunchbox container placed in some undergrowth along the bank.

Although the cache is not close to the water's edge please take caution when the water levels are high as the area around may become slippery.

Please note that you do NOT need to cross the river, cross the stream, enter the area with the cross, or enter the water to retrieve this cache.

It is important to also note that due to many trees in this area the coordinates might be slightly off, and unfortunately this can't be helped so it is advised to use the description and the hint if necessary more than coordinates to find this one!

At the weir you might notice a wooden cross with RIP and a girls name written on it. Her name was Kayleigh Flynn and she was aged 16 when she drowned at the weir on 24th June 2009. She had been swimming there with her cousin and some friends when she and her cousin walked out on the weir. They were swept off their feet and down a chute. Kayleigh was trapped under branches of a submerged tree and drowned (her cousin managed to get clear).

The force of the water pinned Kayleigh under the tree. Her friends were unable to rescue her because of the force of the water and it took the emergency services (three fire engines, one rescue tender, an ambulance and a coastguard helicopter) a full hour before they could manage it. Kayleigh's mother and other relatives had to stand by and watch their efforts. Sadly, Kayleigh was dead by then.

At the inquest into Kayleigh's death, it was learned that the ESB opened gates at the dam to allow extra water into the Liffey earlier that day in preparation for a canoe race, and that this action could have made the current extremely strong. It would seem likely that the water was released without warning to river users downstream. It is also seems that the water level and flow at the weir was normal when Kayleigh and her cousin walked out on the weir, and when the extra water reached the weir it swept the two girls off their feet with fatal consequences.

The cross was erected by Kayleigh's friends at the spot where her body was pulled from the river. If you find this cross please remember Kayleigh and maybe say a prayer for her and her loved ones.
