Geopfad Schönburg

Nahe Naumburg, im gleichnamigen Ort liegend, erhebt sich auf steil an der Saale emporragenden Buntsandstein die Schönburg, eine der ältesten spätromanischen Burgen an der Saale.
Die Schönburg liegt auf einem Sandsteinfelsen etwa 40 m über der Saale. Für die Erbauung des Ortes und der Burg wurde der vorherrschende Buntsandstein verwendet.
Die Region um Schönburg gehört zu der geologischen Einheit der Merseburger Scholle. Das heißt, es ist ein Aufschluss von überregionaler Bedeutung.
Der Buntsandstein besteht, wie der Name schon sagt, aus verschiedenfarbigen Sand- und Tonsandsteinen. Seine Färbung reicht von dunkelroten, gelblichen (sandige) über graue bis zu grünlichen (tonigen) Schichten.
Diese Steine besitzen unterschiedliche Festigkeiten, welche an der Verwitterung zu erkennen sind.
Der Buntsandstein von Schönburg verdient seinen Namen als "bunter Sandstein" besonders. Fast 90 m mächtig ist die Abfolge der Schichten.
Entstanden ist dieses Naturzeugnis vor 250 bis 200 Millionen Jahren der Trias, der ältesten Einheit des Erdmittelalters.
In jener Zeit hatte dieses Gebiet eine andere geografische Position als heute. Es lag 20 Grad südlicher und hatte ein fast trockenes Klima.
Die Rotfärbung der Gesteinssedimente hat hierin eine Ursache.

Der Geopfad führt euch durch Schönburg, und dauert ca. 30 - 60 Minuten.

"Geopath Schönburg"

Close to Naumburg the castle Schönburg (which is one of the oldest late-roman castle at the river Saale) rests on top of an 40m high sandstone rock.
This sandstone was also used during the construction of the castle and the homonymous village which lies at the castles feet.
The region around Schönburg belongs to the geological unit of the "Merseburger Scholle" an overregional outcrop.
The sandstone consists of differently colored sandstone and clay-sandstone.The colorspectrum spans from darkred, yellowish (sandy) stonelayers over to gray and greenish (clay) layers.
All these stonelayers have a different firmness and therefor a different weathering.
All these layers form a nearly 90m high rockformation.The formation was formed 200 to 250 million years ago during the Trias theoldest part of the earths-middleage.
During this time this area had a different geographical position than it has today. The former position was 20 degrees south in an very dry climate.
This dry climate is the reason that the stone appears to be mostly red today.
