Geocache Description:


This cache is located in the grounds of The Cathedral Church of Ferns, and placed with permission. The original church was built by Bishop St. John in1230, but was later destroyed by fire. The remains can still be seen, with one round tower mostly intact. The new church is well patronised and is left open daily for visitors to pop in and reflect. It boasts a fine collection of stained glass, which is to be restored soon. Feel free to have a look. There are four Celtic crosses on the grounds. Beyond the ruins of the cathedral are the ruins of St. Marys Abbey. This Augustinian Abbey was founded in1158 by Diarmait Macmurchadha, the King of Leinster, who died in 1171. His remains can be found in the old cemetery, under a broken cross. Also in Ferns at the top of the village is Ferns castle, once seat of the King of Leinster. The remains of the building can be seen any time, and a visitor centre is open from mid May until 29th September daily, from 10am until 5pm. Entry is free and tours are available inside the castle free, and a guide will give the full history of the area. This is well worth a visit. The cache is a small snap lock box.
