This geocache is in honor of Ralph Hovind and the School Forest program.

On April 27, 1927 the first three school forests in the country were dedicated in Laona, Crandon and Wabeno. Today there are about 320 school forests in Wisconsin on almost 25,000 acres of land. Laona and Wabeno’s original school forests are still owned by their respective school districts and are used by students and teachers. Unfortunately, Crandon’s original forest was sold to help build the new school. In 2005, Ralph Hovind donated 40 acres to the school district of Crandon for a school forest.

Mr. Hovind, purchased the land in the 1950’s while working in the area as a wildlife manager for the Wisconsin Conservation Department, the predecessor to today’s DNR. He had at least three timber harvests on the land with a goal of improving the timber and wildlife habitat.

The goals of the Hovind School Forest are to maintain a working forest that will continue the work that Mr. Hovind started while:
• Providing students with the environmental education experiences that foster personal growth as well as awareness, knowledge, and appreciation of the natural world leading to sound stewardship of the Earth.
• Have students understand that the environment is something to nurture, respect, and conserve through sound environmental practices.
• Prepare leaders in the conservation and sustainable management of forests and other natural resources.
• Provide outdoor environmental education experiences for our students and the community.
• Provide outdoor recreational and cultural opportunities within the limits of the mission statement.
• Provide forestry and wildlife education with an emphasis on multiple use management which emphasizes wildlife, wood products, recreation, aesthetics, historic and scientific values.
• Maintain a school forest committee to address curricular and school forest issues.
