Geocache Description:

Kirkcaldy began as a burgh under the control of Dunfermline Abbey. A harbour built around the east burn gradually led to the growth of the town surrounding the harbour itself, High Street and Tiel burn following the demand of trade with the Baltic.

Early industries which soon prospered included the production of textiles, nail-making and salt panning. The Industrial Revolution of the 19th and 20th centuries proved to be the most famous period for the town which saw the introduction of linoleum. Originally developed in the town as floor cloth, this was quickly dominated by the Michael Nairn & Co but did not become popular across a worldwide scale until the beginning of the 20th century.

Kirkcaldy has long been nicknamed the "Lang Toun" (Scots for "long town") in reference to the main street of the early town, depicted so on maps as early as the 16th and 17th centuries.

George Burn Wynd is on the south side of Kirkcaldy High Street.

In 1888, at the cost of £1,114, a new courtroom and police buildings were completed at George Burn Wynd. The police cells were licensed for the detention of untried prisoners for 14 days, and for convicted men for a period not exceeding 7 days.

As Kirkcaldy grew and prospered, the strength of the Police Force increased and the premises at George Burn Wynd became cramped and unsuitable. A new Police station was opened on St. Brycedale Avenue in December 1903, which is still in use today.

George Burn Wynd is now a short pedestrian path leading from Kirkcaldy High Street to a rear entrance to the Mercat shopping centre.

The current street sign is abbreviated to "Geo Burn Wynd".

Given the name, it’s a mystery why a cache hasn't been placed here already. This is a micro cache and your own pen is necessary.

Be careful for muggles!
