Il Santuario di Castelmonte è antichissimo: il più antico del Friuli ed uno dei più antichi di tutta la cristianità.
Bisogna risalire a circa 1500 anni fa per trovarne le origini, che si affondano nel crepuscolo del Cristianesimo primitivo.
Nel 1962, mentre si scavava per costruire la chiesa inferiore di sotto al Santuario, vennero scoperti due pavimenti in cocciopesto, risalenti almeno al secolo VI: indubbia prova che sino d' allora sulla vetta di Castelmonte c'era « qualcosa ».
Che cosa, a questa altezza e ad oltre otto chilometri da Cividale?
Certamente la sede di una guarnigione romana, un posto di avvistamento e di difesa, nel periodo delle invasioni, incominciato in queste regioni nel secolo V, con quella gotica di Alarico del 402 e con quella unna di Attila del 452, proseguito poi nel 568 con quella longobarda di Alboino e, poco dopo, con le incursioni e le infiltrazioni slave, che dal secolo VII al secolo IX vennero a spegnersi proprio a ridosso di Castelmonte.
Fu, dunque, in quegli anni di terrore che a Castelmonte sorse un avamposto a difesa della città di Cividale e del Friuli; ed i soldati di guardia univano naturalmente alla vigilia in armi l' implorazione alla Vergine, mentre le orde barbare scorrazzavano per le valli e nella pianura.
Fu da allora che Cividale ed il Friuli cominciarono a vedere in Castelmonte una rocca sicura e vittoriosa, circonfusa da segni manifesti della protezione della Vergine.
La Madonna di Castelmonte si rivelò quindi, di faccia alle cime delle Alpi Giulie, quale scudo e conforto alle soglie orientali della Patria del Friuli e dell' Italia.
Sin dai tempi dei Longobardi e dei Franchi, cioè dal 568 al secolo IX, i devoti accorrevano a folle quassù. Così si spiega molto bene perché mai la Madonna di Castelmonte sia stata poi chiamata « la Madonna Antica » ; e perché gli Slavi, arrivati sin qui a quell'epoca, abbiano chiamato Castelmonte « Staragora », cioè «Monte Antico», appunto perché lo trovarono già abitato da tempi remoti.
