About Letts Take a Walk:
Letts Creek is a tributary to the Huron River. Letts is better
known as the creek that meanders its way through Chelsea, running
along the softball fields and through Veterans and TimberTown
parks. During the warmer weather, locals stroll the Letts Creek
trail while children play on the nearby play structures, including
a large wooden ship. Letts Creek is also popular as an ice-skating
venue during the winter, hence the many "watch for thin ice"
warning signs along the watershed.
Letts Creek is also popular during Halloween, when sightings of
the Letts Creek ghost become increasingly common. Legend has it
that the Letts Creek ghost is that of a young Chelsea woman who
fell in love with a young man whom her parents were deadset
against. The lovers would sneak out at night to meet each other,
and they secretly became engaged. From here, the tale diverges. In
one of the more popular retellings, the young woman confides in her
brother, who in turn tells their parents, who toss their daughter's
engagement ring into Letts Creek and forbid her from ever seeing
her beau again. The fiance was soon after sent to Europe for World
War I and killed in action. Heartsick and ill, the young lady died,
her last words pleading with her brother to retrieve her ring from
Letts Creek, which he never did. Her ghost haunts the creek,
searching for her engagement ring and specifically spooking young
engaged women who too closely approach Letts Creek.
