Geocache Description:

Small PB container hidden in Bissell Park below the falls. Close to the river's edge.

This property along the banks of the Grand River was donated for public use by the Bissell family in the early 1960s (present day Bissell Park). This site had been prominent in Elora's industrial history since the early settlement period. Robert Philip chose this location for his North Wellington Mills and Distillery in 1850 and in 1874 the site was taken over by the Elora Carpet Factory. The Carter Malt House also operated near this location. In 1895 the carpet factory burned down and T.E. Bissell established his farm implement firm on the property in 1901. Over the decades the business expanded and in its heyday employed over 200 workers. Best known throughout the province for its disc harrows, in the 1940s Bissell expanded into the transformer business. This was followed by a period of labour unrest resulting in a strike in 1952. Just when stability seemed to have been achieved, sales dropped and the factory closed down in 1954. Although the buildings have been removed, the ruins, including the old mill race, are still in evidence in the park.
