lL Ponte Scaligero, chiamato anche Ponte di Castelvecchio, è celebrato dagli storici come "l'opera più audace e mirabile del medioevo in Verona". Portato a termine nell'arco di tre anni, quasi sicuramente tra il 1354 e il 1356, fu costruito per ordine di Cangrande Il, che intendeva così assicurare alla sua nascente fortezza sul fiume un'autonoma via di fuga (o d’accoglienza di soccorsi) verso il Tirolo, dove regnava suo genero Ludovico il Bavaro. Il nome del costruttore è avvolto nel mistero.
La favola di Amore e Psiche è opera di Apuleio, scrittore latino del II secolo e fa parte in posizione centrale (dal capitolo 28 del libro IV al capitolo 24 del libro VI) del suo unico romanzo: Le Metamorfosi.

Per questo motivo convoca il suo figlio alato (...di certo un gran temerario: con i suoi scandalosi costumi, nel disprezzo della morale pubblica, armato di frecce e di torce, visita di notte le case degli altri, corrompe tutti i letti nuziali e fa nascere impunemente guai enormi, senza far niente di buono. IV,30) e lo invia perchè faccia innamorare la bella Psiche dell'uomo più brutto e avaro della terra, perché ella sia così coperta dalla vergogna di questa relazione. Colpita da sventura ordinata dal dio di Mileto viene salvata da Zefiro (...a quel soffio le vesti di psiche sono tutte un palpito, le pieghe del vestito si gonfiano e lei, a poco a poco, è sollevata da terra da quell'arietta tranquilla e, giù giù per il pendio del monte viene deposta dolcemente in una valletta sottostante, su un letto di erbe e di fiori, IV,35). Fu affascinata dal palazzo divino lì vicino e vi entrò...ogni notte al buio Eros cerca la sua amata Psiche, e si lasciano ad incontri che portano piaceri divini(...ma ecco giungere lo sposo ignoto: salì sul lato, la fece sua e, prima che facesse l'alba scomparve in fretta.V,4). Una notte Psiche, esortata dalle sorelle invidiose,con una spada e una lampada ad olio decide di vedere il volto del suo amante,(...non appena spinse in avanti il lume, all'interno del letto apparve chiaro, potè vedere la più dolce e mansueta di tutte le fiere: Cupido, in persona...V,22) e non sazia di curiosità estrae una freccia dalla faretra e ne vuole provare la punta con l'estremità del pollice ma, per un movimento troppo brusco della mano che ancora trema, si punge abbastanza in profondità il dito cosicchè affiorano sulla pelle goccioline rosee di sangue. Così senza saperlo, Psiche viene presa d'amore per lo stesso Amore...V,23). Scoperto, Eros si levò in volo e fuggì via. Inizia così l'errare di Psiche alla ricerca del suo Amore.
V,25. Psiche, prostrata a terra, finchè potè vederlo seguì il volo del marito gemendo piena di disperazione. Ma quando lui, sempre più in alto grazie al mezzo delle ali, gli fu sottratto alla vista, essa, raggiunta la sponda del fiume vicino, si gettò vicino nelle sue onde. Tuttavia,il mite fiume, evidentemente per riguardo de quel dio che è capace di incendiare anche le acque e inoltre temendo di averne poi qualche guaio, avvoltala in una bolla inoffensiva, la depose sulla riva lussureggiante d'erba.
La cache posta vicino al fiume Adige vuole ricordare una delle fatiche di Psiche fatte per conquistare il suo Amore.
