Better Days Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

jwtrammell: This cache has seen it's own better days. For some reason, cache containers keep disappearing from this location. Because of this, I have decided to retire this cache.

Geocache Description:

Highland History Cache by j4hdude

Welcome to the Highland Historical District. Take some time to walk or drive around the surrounding areas near this cache site to view the old historic homes and buildings that have seen better days.

In 1880, the Santa Fe Railroad Co. extended its railroad tracks from Los Angeles to the eastern valley of San Bernardino. They created a kite-shaped loop that connected Highland, Redlands, Cramville and Mentone to the main tracks in San Bernardino. After the railroad track was complete, trains were used to ship out the major citrus fruit produce out to Los Angeles and surrounding areas. Packing houses would be built along the train tracks, so it would be easy enough to ship the produce out.

This geocache is hidden right near a few abandoned packing houses that have seen better days. These packing houses were built in the late 1800's to early 1900's at a time when citrus was a very large market.

The closest packing house, the silver looking one with most of the window's broken, was the Highland Fruit Growers Packing House. My Great Grandfather was the manager of this packing house from 1936 to the late 50's or early 60's. No one is for sure of the exact date. His name was Walter Ray Garl.

Currently, organizations are trying to work out deals to renovate this packing house to preserve all the history from that time era. Currently no one is allowed inside the building, but tours might be offered during the Highland Citrus Festival in the spring.

You are looking for an altoids can, that has a log and a pencil hidden inside. This cache should be a easy one to find. Please be stealthy, for at times this road can have a good amount of cars driving by.
