The Paper Birch is generally abundant throughout the state and occurs chiefly on the better sand and gravel soils in mixture with pine and aspen. They reach heights of 65 to 70 ft. Hard, strong, tough, they are used for spools, toothpicks, toys, handles, paper pulp, flooring, firewood and interior finish. Years ago, birch bark was extensively used by northern Native Americans for canoes and wigwams and for making baskets, cups, bags and other useful utensils.

Permission to place this cache was given by the Fond du Lac County Parks/Planning Department. As this section of the Eisenbahn Trail is maintained by the Fond du lac County Parks/Planning Dept., the “DNR Placement Notification Form” has been submitted to the Fond du lac County Parks/Planning Department at the request of the DNR.
