Steinbruch Schümel

Naturschutzgebiet / Nature Reserve "Steinbruch Schümel"


Einführung

Das Juragebirge ist durch Gesteins-Schichten aufgebaut, die während der Jurazeit in einem flachen Meer abgelagert wurden, und zwar in der geologischen Zeitspanne von vor 210 bis 140 Millionen Jahren. Die einzelnen Schichten (obere Effinger-Schichten, Gerstenhübelkalk, untere Effinger-Schichten, Spatkalk etc.) wurden horizontal, d.h. eine auf der anderen, abgelagert.

Gesteinsschichten

Während der Jurafaltung vor ungefähr 6 Millionen Jahren wurden sie aus der Horizontale gerissen, schräg oder steil gestellt und manchmal übereinander geschoben und verfaltet. Bei dieser Gelegenheit haben sich auch Klüfte herausgebildet. Man erhält hier den besten Anschauungsunterricht zur Erklärung des Begriffs Faltenjura.

Im Steinbruch Schümel sind durch den Abbau von Kalkstein und Mergel für die Zementherstellung der "Holderbank Cement und Beton" (= heutige Holcim), welcher von 1913 bis 1980 stattfand, einzigartige Aufschlüsse (= solider, gewachsener Fels ist sichtbar) der Juragesteine geschaffen worden. Diese Aufschlüsse sind im Juragebirge relativ selten, weil die Gesteine meist durch eine dicke Schicht von Erde und verwitterten Gesteinen bedeckt sind. Deshalb ermöglicht dieser Steinbruch einen einmaligen Einblick in die geologischen Verhältnisse des Juragebirges.

Nach der Schliessung des Steinbruchs wurde mit der Rekultivierung begonnen. Alle Betriebsanlagen wurden von Holcim zurückgebaut; mit Ausnahme eines kurzen Stollens, der als Winterquartier für Fledermäuse, Amphibien und weitere Tierarten erhalten wurde.

Zudem wurden in diesem Naturschutzgebiet bis heute viele Pflanzen heimisch: z.B. Huflattich, Weisser und Gelber Honigklee, Wilde Möhre und Glockenblume. Auch viele Tiere haben sich angesiedelt: sieben Amphibienarten pflanzen sich in den Gewässern des Schümels fort und diverse Insekten und Reptilien können in diesem Naturschutzgebiet entdeckt werden.

Bitte beachtet die folgenden Bestimmungen:
- keine Fossilien aus dem Fels brechen
- keine Tiere fangen oder aussetzen
- keine Abfälle deponieren oder verbrennen

Schickt ein Mail mit den Antworten zu den folgenden Fragen an arlesheimcacher:

  • Frage 3: Auf der Info-Tafel "Vom Steinbruch zum Naturschutzgebiet" ist die bevorzugte Lage des Steinbruch Schümels beschrieben. Welche drei artenreiche Landschaftsräume trafen dort zusammen?
Anschliessend dürft Ihr den Earthcache loggen. Wir melden uns, falls etwas nicht stimmen sollte.

Freiwillig: Geht zu Punkt N 47° 25.767 E 008° 10.747 und macht ein Bild von Euch, Eurem GPS und der östlich dahinterliegenden Wand und hängt es dem Logbericht an.



Introduction

The Jura mountains were built up by rock layers which were deposited in a flat sea during the Jurassic period. This geological period occurred between 210 and 140 million years ago. The single layers (e.g. upper Effinger-stratum, Gerstenhübel-limestone beds, lower Effinger-stratum, late-limestone etc.) were deposited horizontally, stacked one above the other.

During the Jurassic folding which took place approximately 6 mio. years before, the different layers were ripped from the horizontal, forced sloping or upright and sometimes they were pushed one above the other and folded. On this occasion chasms were formed. At this location you see perhaps the best visual illustration of the meaning of Jura folds.

In the Schümel quarry unique outcrops (solid visible cliffs) of the Jura rock have been created due to the quarrying of limestone and marl for the production of cement by the ''Holderbank Cement and Beton'' (= today's Holcim) which took place between 1913 and 1980. These outcrops are rare in the Jura mountains as the rocks are in most cases covered by a thick layer of earth and weathered rocks. That's why this quarry provides a unique insight into the geological conditions of the Jura mountains.

After the shutdown of the quarry it was carefully returned to nature. All factory equipment was stripped down; with the exception of a short gallery which has been preserved as winter quarters for bats, amphibians and other animal species.

In addition to that a lot of plants have become native in this nature reserve: e.g. coltsfoot, white and yellow melilot, wild carrot and bellflowers. A lot of animals settled down too: seven amphibious species breed in the waters of "Schümel" and various insects and reptiles can be discovered in this nature reserve.


Please respect the following rules:
- do not quarry any fossils out of the rocks
- do not catch or abandon any animals
- do not dispose of or burn any waste
