An easy roadside cache.
Below this ridge is the 1071 metre Poto-o-tarao railway tunnel opened in 1889 but used by farmers and travellers until 1897 when the rail finally reached the tunnel. In 1980 when the line was electrified a new larger tunnel was drilled parallel by the Italian firm of Codelfa – Codgefar. Their memorial shrine is located near the north end of the new tunnel.
If you empty your drink bottle at a spot near the cache some would flow south into the Whanganui river catchment area and enter the sea at Wanganui. The rest would make its way north into the Mangapehi stream which in turn joins the Mokau river to reach the coast at Mokau in North Taranaki.
On a fine day the Central Plateau mountains can be seen from here while 5km down Tapuwae road are the Tapuwae Gardens which boast one of the largest Rhododendron and rare plant collections in NZ.
