Geocache Description:

This cache was placed in Caledonia State Park, under the authority of the Environmental Interpretive Technician. The name Graeffenburg is Germanic in origin and has been used to denote both the hill and the Graeffenburg Inn.

From the Hessian soldiers during the Revolutionary War to the Mennonite and Amish immigrants during the 1800s, Germans, Austrians and Swiss have had a big impact on Pennsylvania and this local area.

Situated on the border between Franklin and Adams Counties along Lincoln Highway, Graeffenburg Inn was built in 1874 as a hotel and restaurant. Purchased by the state in 1902, it was leased to William Putch and his wife, actress Jean Stapleton (actress in "All in the Family"), when destroyed on March 15, 1980 by an arson fire. The site where it was located is currently occupied by the Michaux State Forest office.
