Geocache Description:

Elevation 235.2 m.

A series dedicated to 1940's advertising. Each cache is a historical look back at how the media portraid common products, some good, some bad. I have scanned the adds from old magazines I have found at my grandpas house from 1947. All of the locations will have something in common.

Unexcelled Chemical Corporation

The Cranbury Brick Yard property is the 395 acre, former Unexcelled Chemical Corporation's manufacturing facility. The site is located at the Northwest corner of the New Jersey Turnpike and Brick Yard Road between New Jersey Turnpike Exits 8 and 8A.

From 1930 to 1954, the site was owned and operated by the former Unexcelled Chemical Corporation (“UCC”) and was home to significant manufacturing facilities, which included the production of signal flares, fireworks, insect repellant, and in later years, military munitions including grenade fuses and six-pound incendiary bombs to support the war effort.

On July 30, 1954, the facility was closed by the New Jersey Department of Labor (NJDOL) shortly after an explosion on the property killed two plant workers, injuring several others. The explosion occurred in a munitions storage facility on the site, causing live and detonated munitions to be sprayed over 88 acres of the site.

Demolition of all remaining structures was completed in 1957. Since then, the site has sat idle, aside from periodic environmental investigation efforts. No significant remediation efforts have occurred on the site. There are thousands of munitions of explosive concern (MEC), live and detonated, currently littering the site.

The MEC remaining at the site consists of Military munitions and explosives that are accutely hazardous and can maim or kill if not handled properly.

The company no longer exists, and the products are not available.
