Geocache Description:

This is such a remote area that I wanted to make a geocache you would find worth your while. It is in a wooden box, so please sit and enjoy each item in the box as you suck in fresh mountain air and study the scenery

There is a beautiful hummingbird, hand-carved from burl, for the FTF!

The altitude is 6048 feet. The area is considered high mountain desert with rolling hills and mountains. Mostly juniper trees, cactus and sagebrush.

This is a county dirt road that rarely gets maintained. It is slow going but the scenery is awesome so you wouldn't want to drive fast. Short areas of the road are considered bench roads being that they are narrow and look down on the Little Snake River. It isn't a dangerous road but you might want to think about not driving on it if it is pouring rain as it becomes quite muddy.

There is a sign on the other end of the road stating that it is a 4 wheel drive road only, however, I have ridden over it in a cadillac several times.

There are lots of species of wildlife in this area some of which include deer, antelope, elk, bear, mountain lions, foxes, coyotes and bighorn sheep. In the Spring time it is a photographer's dream for taking pictures of the many kinds of wild flowers.

Once you open the box you can read the history of the area and observe a little mini museum on the left hand side. Everything is glued down so please don't disturb those things. On the right hand side of the box you will find all kinds of goodies in which you are welcome to pick and choose, if your little heart desires.

The cache includes a FTF gift, as well as an introduction letter, deer head hitch cover, butterfly/thermometer fridge magnet, hummingbird magnet, Cow seeds, Mini handpainted pair of wooden oars, horsehair cowboy boot plant tender, tiny mirror in blue case, a kid's ring, small photo album of photos and pictures of things you might see in the area, history of the area, geocaching cards, and log book. Last but not least, there is a travel bug included. He wants to go visit other historical places of interest.

Be careful and watch for rattlesnakes. I've never seen one up in this area but that doesn't mean they aren't there as there are many in this neck of the desert! If you see one vehicle it will be considered a traffic jam - ha - about the only time people travel here is during hunting season or you might see a geocacher hot on the trail of a hidden treasure. The only other form of life on the road would be sheepherders and some sheep. . . once in awhile a cow or a cowboy!

Please be considerate and do not trespass on Cross Mountain Property. It is well marked so you shouldn't have a problem.

If you are coming off the Deer Lodge Park Road - County Road 25 goes on down to County Road 10, turn right which will take you back to State Highway 318. Turn right to go to Maybell.
