Henry D. Humphrey was the Alma City Marshal who was murdered by members of the Bonnie and Clyde gang in the summer of 1933.
In the summer of 1933, Bonnie and Clyde were the most wanted criminals in the Southwest. Even though they passed through Northwest Arkansas many times during the two years they were active, that summer was the only time they actually operated in the area. Bonnie had sustained extensive burns to her legs in a Wellington, Texas car wreck and was resting the Twin Cities Tourist Camp in Fort Smith with Clyde at her side. The group was running low on cash and it fell to Buck Barrows and W.D. Jones to obtain funds. On June 23rd while returning from Fayetteville after robbing the R.L. Brown Grocery Market, Barrow and Jones encountered Alma Marshal Henry D. Humphrey and Crawford County Duputy Sheriff Ansel “Red” Salyers on Highway 71 North of Alma. In the ensuing exchange of gunfire Humphrey was shot in the chest, from the blast of a shotgun fired by Buck Barrows and he died three days later in a local hospital. The members of the Barrow Gang and Parker’s sister Billie narrowly escaped that night to Oklahoma and then to Kansas. A plaque on the grounds of the City Complex Building in Alma commemorates Humphrey’s death. The cache is not at the above coordinates, the listed coordinates is close to where the murder is believed to have been committed.
