Geocache Description:

If the hint doesn't help, email the CO. Time to swim, bike, cache and learn a little history. South Jersey has a lot of one-room and two-room schools that are still in existence though they are used for other purposes than as a school now. If the clue doesn't help, read the description for School's Out 01.

This cache will take you to a vantage point near a one-room school in Palermo where Mr. Wigoweb attended third grade. You will actually be on the grounds of the restored Friendship School built around 1830.

We had no hot lunches. Instead, everyone carried a lunchbox with sandwiches and a thermos.

The art program was on-going and we drew or painted with water colors every week. A traveling art teacher would visit the school sometimes, too.

Our school did not have a library, but the County Book Mobile stopped by every two weeks. We were excused from the classroom two at a time to go out to the Book Mobile to return books and check out new ones. That was always an exciting day.

During Mr. Wigoweb’s time in third grade, the Upper Township Elementary School in Marmora was completed and opened to students.

During the last week before Christmas, we helped the teacher pack many boxes with textbooks and supplies. On the last day before Christmas break, each of us was given one of the boxes to take home on the school bus. After Christmas, we carried the boxes to the new school on the school bus. This probably saved a lot of moving expenses for the school district.

This new school had one room for each grade, a cafeteria and indoor toilets with plumbing. We still had no library though and the Book Mobile continued to visit.

School was a lot of fun in those days.
