Monarch Knitting Company
One major textile firm in Dunnville was the Monarch Knitting Co.
founded in 1903 by partners F.R. Lalor, J.A. Burns and George Orme.
The company was llisted on the Toronto Stock Exchange in 1911 and
opened other plants in St. Catharines, Buffalo and St. Thomas. It
became one of Canada's largest textile producing firms and landed
contracts to supply uniforms to National Hockey League teams like
the Toronto Maple Leafs. Operations in Dunnville ceased in
1967.

This picture was taken from a Monarch Knitting Company sales
catalogue, dated 1914. Hockey wear was but one item from a vast
variety of goods manufactured at this Dunnville industry.
The plant manufactured nearly 800,000 garments a year, made up into
almost 600 different styles.
The player on the left is wearing a "Jersey Knit Hockey Cap" along
with a "Men's Fine Cashmere Jersey Seater ... suitable for hockey,
football or lacrosse, made in any design or cobination of colours,"
and ti finish of his smart looking ensemble, he has matching "Men's
Athletic Hose, made of solid worsted, without feet."
The goaltender in the centre is dressed a little differently. He
wears a "Men's Half-Cardigan Stitch Sweater, medium weight solid
worsted," together with a matching "Men's Fine Half-Cardigan Stitch
Cap."
The Dunnville winger on the right sports the same "Half-Cardigan
Stitch Cap and Sweater" outfit as the goalie, but in another of
Monarch's variety of styles.
The Monarch Knitting Company which was so important to the
community, providing as it did eomployment for many Dunnvillites,
is now but a memory. It passed from local ownership in 1945 and
changed hands a couple of times. After operating for over 60 years,
the company closed down in 1967. The buildings were eventually torn
down and today the land is the site of Riverview Gardens -- a
residential condominium complex.
