Schwaney - Erdfall im Eggegebirge

Hier auf dem Kamm des Eggegebirges zwischen Schwaney und Bad Driburg befindet sich eine sehr große Doline, auch Erdfall genannt. Nach Berechnung der Geologen dürfte sie im 16. Jahrhundert eingefallen sein.
Es ist immer wieder ein Phänomen diese Dolinen anzusehen und zu bestaunen. Gerade hier im Eggegebirge sind derartige Karstformen in sehr typischer Form ausgeprägt und landschaftbestimmend. In großer Zahl und über die ganze Paderborner Hochfläche verteilt finden wir Erdfälle und Dolinen. Diese trichterförmigen Dolinen sind von sehr unterschiedlicher Größe. Ursache ihrer Entstehung sind Hohlraumbildungen im kalkigen Untergrund, die dann zum Einsturz kommen, wenn die Auflast des darüber liegenden Gesteins zum Einbrechen führt.
Im Grenzbereich Muschelkalk-Neokomsandstein der Egge ist die Dolinendichte besonders hoch. Gipsauslaugungen und aggressives Mischwasser sind die Ursache dafür. In der Regel sind die Dolinen trocken. Manche der Dolinen sind aber auch Nassdolinen, (deren Grund mit Colluvien ausgekleidet ist, was die Bildung eines kleinen Sees ermöglicht hat; Bsp.: Hausheide bei Lichtenau und Wehringer Pohl bei Neuenbeken), wieder andere sind Ponordolinen (in sie fließt ständig oder zeitweilig Oberflächenwasser).
Erdfälle findet man auch noch heute westl. von Schwaney in der Gemarkung "Auf dem Heng". Viele wurden, da sie bei der Feldbestellung hinderlich waren, im Laufe der Jahrzehnte zugefüllt. Ein riesiger Trichter bildete sich im Juli 1798 nahe von Schwaney an der alten Poststraße (heute B 64). Der Schwaneyer Samtrichter Brüning berichtete darüber am 7. Juli 1798 nach Paderborn, dass man mit Hilfe der benachbarten Gemeinden, versucht habe, den in der Poststraße eingefallenen Trichter zu füllen (siehe Akte im Staatsarchiv Münster).
Auch wird in dem Schwaneyer Heimatbuch (Heinz Küting, 1963, Seite 430 ff) von einer Postkutsche berichtet, die mit Pferden und Passagieren in einem ungeheuren Trichter versunken sei. Ebenso von einem Bauern der im März 1942 bei der Ackerbestellung mit seinem Pferdegespann in einem Trichter eingesunken ist. Der jüngste Erdfall, der in Schwaney bekannt geworden ist, bildete sich im Winter 1960/61.

Schwaney – depression in the Eggegebirge
On the ridge of the Eggegebirge, right between Schwaney and Bad Driburg a huge sinkhole, also called depression, can be found. According to geologists’ estimations, this depression can be dated back to the 16th century.
It is always a phenomenon to watch and to gaze at those depressions.
Especially here in the Eggegebirge those kinds of karst formations can be found in their very distinctive shape, also determining the structure of the landscape.
Many of these sinkholes and depressions can be found all over the Paderbornian plateau.
In general, the funnel-shaped depressions have different sizes. Causes of their emergences are hollow spaces within the limy subsurface, being subject to landslides, in case the burden of stones laying above the hollow spaces is too high.
The concentration of depressions is particularly high at the border zone of the Egge especially due to cast extractions and aggressive mixed water. Usually depressions are dry, however some depressions can also be wet (the ground is faced with colluviens allowing the formation of small lakes; e.g. Hausheide near Lichtenau and Wehringer Pohl near Neuenbeken), in turn other are ponordepressions (in which surface water flows in constantly or temporary).
Nowadays, depressions can still be found west of Schwaney at the boundary “Auf dem Heng”.
Many have been filled up over the centuries as they have been hindering the ploughing.
A huge funnel has been created in July 1798 near Schwaney at the old Poststraße (nowadays B 64). The Schwaneyian jurist Brüning has been reporting to Paderborn about this depression on July, 7th 1798, informing that efforts have been made together with the close-by townships to fill-up the shrunken funnel in the Poststraße (see also dossier at the Staatsarchiv Münster).
Also in the Schwaneyer Heimatbuch (Heinz Küting, 1963, pages 430ff.) a stage coach is mentioned of which horses and passengers have been sunken into an enormously funnel. In addition a farmer being sunken into a funnel together with his workhorse while doing the fieldwork is mentioned in this book. The latest depression known in Schwaney can be dated back to winter 1960/61.
