Peach County is the youngest county in the State of Georgia having been formed in 1924 from parts of Houston and Macon Counties. Around the beginning of the Twentieth Century, a new enterprise, the peach industry developed which ultimately replaced cotton as the main crop in the Middle Georgia Counties. In 1875 Samuel Henry Rumph of Marshallville propogated a new peach from the seed of a Chinese Cling which a relative had obtained several years earlier. The Elberta, named for Mr. Rumph's first wife brought fame and wealth to the section extending in all directions from Fort Valley. When the county was created, peaches had become so important to everyone living in the area that it was only natural that the county should bear the name of its leading product.
This cache is available during business hours only and you will have to pass through a security check point to reach it. It is placed with the permission of the Sheriff of Peach County. There will be a lot of signal bounce at ground zero. You do not need to tear up any bushes or shrubbery....please cover the container once you replace it and be sure that it is closed properly to keep moisture out.
