In 1863 Jesse and Elizabeth Bickle were the first white settlers to homestead in this area which became the present day Crete, Nebraska. Mr. Bickle was the first postmaster of the town originally called Mapleton for the Maple trees near his homestead. In 1870 Bickle set aside a 40 acres tract and platted a town on the south part of his homestead. He called it Blue River City. The railroad wanted to build their line straight through the Bickle homestead, but Bickle would have no part of it. He quickly planted an orchard north east of his house and according to a little known law the railroad could not destroy the orchard. This is the reason the tracks swerve south around the Bickle homestead.
In 1879 Bickle set aside another piece of his homestead for the Riverside Cemetery He died in 1885. Mr. Bickle and his contributions are remembered each year when the Crete 4th graders visit the Maples and celebrate “Pioneers Day”.
