Battalion Park - Calgary Parks 100 Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

GeoKs: Went by yesterday and all that's left of the replacement cache is the earth magnet. Unfortunately, it seems this location is prone to muggling and there's not much in the way of open space in Battalion Park (i.e. hiding spots that don't have proximity issues), so we've decided to archive this one.

Calgary Parks 100 Project, celebrating Calgary Parks 100th Anniversary!
Calgary Area Cachers teaming up with The City of Calgary Parks Department.

The Calgary Parks 100 Project is a partnership between the City of Calgary Parks and the Calgary Area Cachers, in celebration of Calgary Parks' 100th anniversary. Calgary Parks supplied cache containers and swag for 100 caches, and members of the Calgary geocaching community placed these 100 caches in 100 parks around Calgary.

Battalion Park is dedicated to the Canadian soldiers who trained in Calgary from 1915 to 1918. The park overlooks the area where Sarcee Camp was located and today you can see four giant white numbers on the hill - 51, 151, 137 and 113. At one time there were more than twenty of these battle insignia numbers on the hill where the park is located. The numbers are all constructed of whitewashed rock. Since the park opened in 1991, white painted chain link fencing has been placed over the numbers, to prevent vandals from rolling the rocks down the hill.

The 113th Lethbridge regiment insignia remains in its original location. The other three surviving numbers (the 137th from Calgary, the 51st from Edmonton and the 151st from Red Deer) were placed in their present location when the park was developed.

There is a small parking lot on Signal Hill Drive at the top end of the park. A cairn and several flag poles are located near the parking lot. Walk down the stairs to the paved pathway and you will have the opportunity to read the numerous information plaques with historic photos. This park is an ideal location to spend some quiet time on Remembrance Day, reading about the history of Sarcee Camp and considering the contribution of Canada's miltary in World War I.

The cache is a small Lock 'n' Lock container hidden near the west end of the paved pathway. Parking coordinates are posted both for the small parking area off Signal Hill Drive and a quiet residential cul-de-sac that would allow for stroller / wheelchair access to the cache hiding spot. When placed, the cache contained an Signal the Frog "First to Find" micro geocoin to be claimed by the first finder and some very nice Calgary Parks-supplied trading swag. Remember - trade up, trade even, or don't trade at all!

PLEASE replace the cache carefully, so that it's out of sight of the casual passerby. Thanks!
