Geocache Description:

Most of the year this is a great spot for a picnic to take in the serenity and listen to the birds.

But for 3 days a year the silence is broken by the roar of Rally Cars. This was hidden in an area which you can see them "fly" past.

Land was first purchased for forestry at Mount Crawford in 1909. Plantings commenced in 1914; two species of eucalypts (Narrow-leaved Ironbark and South Australian Blue gum) and two species of pine (Radiata and Maritime pine).

Plantings continued to expand until the 1960?s. Many of the original plantations have since been clear felled and replanted.
Survival rate for the plantings range from 90-98% depending on the season.

About 70,000 tonnes of timber is harvested annually. Current reserve area is 12,367 hectares.

Many old gold diggings exist in the Mount Crawford district. John Watts made a rich strike in 1884 in the gully named after him. News of the discovery sparked a major rush in 1885.
