The Mucklands near Montezuma Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

Sapience Trek: As there's been no cache to find for months, I'm archiving it to keep it from continually showing up in search lists, and to prevent it from blocking other cache placements. Caches archived for lack of maintenance or response cannot be unarchived.

Geocache Description:

Cache is a 35mm film canister. Hidden exactly where you think. I placed a rock on top so critters would hopefully not remove it. Please do the same after finding and signing. Thanks!
(There is a pull-off right near the cache.)

This hunt will take you to an open stetch of State Route 31. This Route is actually part of the Erie Canal bike trail and takes you through this farmed muckland frequented by many birds during migration.

Muck is a soil made up primarily of humus from drained swampland. Private farms here raise corn, potatoes and other vegtables on these fields.

Muck farming on drained bogs is an important part of agriculture in New York, Ohio, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Wisconsin, and Florida, where mostly vegetables are grown. American "muckers" often have roots from the Netherlands or Eastern Europe, where their ancestors practiced a similar type of farming. The soils are deep, dark colored, and friable, often underlain by marl or marly clay.

In the fall this is a great place to watch migrating geese.
