Commencement at Rowan Traditional Cache

Rowan University is by many measures a new school. It was founded in 1923; in contrast, Rutgers and The College of New Jersey were founded in 1766 and 1855 respectively. It only reached university status in 1997, and it just opened its medical school, the Cooper Medical School of Rowan University. Nearly ninety years old, it is just starting.
The first building on campus was Bunce Hall, where this cache is located. Most consider the most important event that has yet occurred on campus was the summit conference between President Lyndon Johnson and Soviet Premier Aleksei Kosygin in June 1967, a meeting that some historians argue helped to ease tensions between the super powers. One will find the site of that meeting just a short walk away, at Hollybush, a quick diversion for those who enjoy visiting older buildings. To thank the college for hosting what some believe marked a beginning of a new relationship with the US and the Soviet Union, President Johnson delivered the commencement address the next summer.
While that “commencement” had international consequences, the alumni of Rowan fondly remember the University Green (the front of Bunce Hall) for their graduation ceremonies held each spring. While Rowan has developed a number of new programs recently, it remains true its roots as a “normal” school, by attracting to its education and Liberal Arts programs, people who want to be teachers. LBJ taught high school early in his life, and public education remained important to him as it does for Rowan.
We found our very first cache on campus (Rowan’s Cache GC136C4), and we have introduced geocaching to over twenty-five friends and relatives with it. So it seems fitting that we hide our first here. With all these associations with “commencement,” our title should be obvious.
The cache is very small and traditional, one that experienced seekers will have found many times before—but not like the annoying ones of this type. Even when classes are in session, you won’t have much trouble as most students and teachers enter from the sides and the rear of Bunce. Unlike some colleges, Rowan offers visitors parking. This campus is very quiet on weekends, and you may park anywhere. The university begins its preparations for commencement in April, and the stage may remain up for some time, yet even with the stage installed, one should grab this find quickly. However, on graduation day, impossible stealth is required as nearly 10,000 muggles will be staring at where you need to be!
As it is in our opinion a very easy find, we hope sincerely that, on this campus still committed to training teachers, that experienced seekers use it to show friends and family (especially children) how rewarding and fun geocaching is. In that spirit, we dedicate it to all those who got us hooked with our first finds nearby in South Jersey.
