Ninety five miles south of Charleston, lies the island of Hilton Head, SC. Shaped like a foot, the island sections are sometimes referred to as the ankle, heel, instep and toe. Hilton Head island boasts 12 miles of beach along it's east shore of the Atlantic ocean. The tides change as much as six to eight feet between high and low. English sea captain William Hilton named the island for himself after observing the headlands as he sailed along the coast. The island has a rich history and was developed in the 1950's by the visionary Charles Fraser. Fraser fought popular opinion and created Sea Pines, a hugely successful and environmentally sensitive resort area. For more info on the interesting history of this area, just search on “Hilton Head Island History”. One of our favorite vacations was spent at Sea Pines on Hilton Head Island. There is so much to do. Here are a few things: Renting bikes and riding along some of the many paved bike trails to the beach! Playing in the surf. Eating fresh seafood. Visiting the Harbor Town Lighthouse. Plus viewing the marina, Harbor Town Golf Course, and Calibogue sound from the top! Take an afternoon cruise, see some dolphins. Play some golf. And more golf! Rent a speed boat. And see more dolphins! Geocaching, of course. Eat at the Salty Dog Café. And check out the webcam! Viewing the sunset. And so much more. In 1956,a two-lane swing bridge, the James Byrnes Bridge, was constructed, opening the island to the mainland. It was replaced in 1982 with the current four-lane bridge. To get to this ammo box cache, you'll need to cross a bridge too. Park at the end of St. Rene Rd. THERE IS NO PARKING ALONG CHENOWETH RUN ROAD. You can use the parking coordinates below.
