Geocache Description:

This cache is part of the Nipigon River Recreation Trail Series of caches. The Nipigon River Trail is part of the Voyageur Trail System, which, when completed, will run from Sault Ste Marie to Thunder Bay. The Nipigon River Trail runs from Nipigon to Red Rock. This series will take you on the Nipigon portion of the trail. The series should take no more than 2 hours to complete. The trail is a linear trail, so you will have to backtrack to get back to your vehicle. If you wish, you can carry on to Red Rock and pick up the other caches along the trail, but you will need to figure out how to get back to your car from there.

These Wetlands on the Nipigon River are classed as a Provincially Significant Wetland due to their location on the North Shore of Lake Superior. Numerous species of waterfowl and other bird use the area as a stopover during the spring and fall migrations. Many other birds and animals use the wetlands as year round or seasonal homes. The sign at the cache location describes the type of Wetlands and their significance to the wildlife that use it. Wetlands act as filters and help keep the water clean, which is why they are known as Mother Nature’s Kidneys. Read the sign at this location for more information.
