Schaumkalkplateau bei
Zscheiplitz

The foamchalk of Zscheiplitz
The triassic rocks form the geological framework of the
region.
This landscape which consists of different layers of rock
and was developed mostly by river erosions during the Quarternary
Qeriod.
During these erosions the triassic rocks were shaped out of the the
slopes depending on the hardness of the individual stone.
The word Triassic comes from the greek word for trinity.
In geological terms this "trinity" means the sequence of
colorsandstone, clamchalk and Keuper.
The colorsandstone and Keuperlayers are usually sedimentations of
rivers and lakes,
while the clamchalk is usually a deposition of a shallow inland
sea.
Over centurys clamchalk (also called foamchalk) was degraded near
Zscheiplitz.
Today this area is exploited and a vast former quarry shows the
dimension of the stone extraction.
The lower clamchalk can be seen at the quarry.
The foamchalk consists mostly of massive, porous rock strata.
This kind of stone can be found everywhere where foamchalk is
situated close to the surface.
Because of withering more and more particles dissolved and so small
cavities where created.
These cavities make the stone so porous.
The matrix (groundmass) is the only thing left from the
stone.
This, about 100m long, chalkstonefront developed 245 million years
ago in a shallow, warm marginal sea with limited circulation.
