Geocache Description:

An easy “beginner” cache placed for the Lake Fairfax Geocaching Camp, Aug. 23 – 27, 2010; the cache will remain in place after the camp. The park is open from dawn to dusk; please seek only during park hours! This small cache is located about 10 feet off an old trail near Campground “C." A park map and other information can be found at: http://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/parks/lakefairfax/downloads/map_lakefairfaxpark.pdf

Lake Fairfax was created by the Crippen family, the owners of this land in the 1950’s, who constructed the dam to fill the lake and opened it as a commercial enterprise, with a sandy beach where the dock and boardwalk now stand, in the 1960’s. (One of the cache owners remembers coming here as a young teenager, when the drive out from Arlington to Lake Fairfax was a drive in the country along two-lane Rt. 7!) The lake and land surrounding it was acquired by the park authority in 1966, with additional acreage added later. From the park entrance, follow the paved road to Campground C (if the gate to the campground is closed, you can park in the lot for playing fields 1-7 and walk to the trailhead from there). There is some parking available at the restroom/bathhouse for Campground C. You can start just behind campsite C-34; the trail is no longer being maintained so there will be some bushwhacking necessary! It may also be possible to take the nature trail to access the cache, although we haven't gone that way ourselves; you can find its trailhead farther downhill from Site C-34. Please replace the container so it will be out of view of the trail - in the little "hidey hole" that fits it so well - and add some sticks or leaves on top. It has been left out in open view several times! This cache is placed at the request of and with permission of the Fairfax County Park Authority and conforms to all park regulations for the placement of geocaches. PROUD MEMBER OF NOVAGO Visit: http://www.novago.org/wp/ Congratulations to radmanryano for his first FTF! NOTE: November 2013: The trail system in this part of the park has been re-aligned and the cache is on an older section of trail no longer being maintained. While the coordinates will still enable you to get to the cache from the campground, you will have more bushwhacking, over fallen trees and through more undergrowth. We have upped the difficulty and terrain ratings to reflect this.
