How to get into
then area
You can find a
way to Valkeasilta from two directions. Either you take the route
from Karhujärvi (highway 5) towards Hautajärvi by driving app. 11
km to the well marked signpost or take the route from Hautajärvi
(highway Salla – Kuusamo). From the signpost its app. 3.5 km
to Valkeasilta. Be careful, the road is not in a very good
shape.
Kalliovaaran retkeilypolku ja sen
nähtävyydet, hiidenkirnut, sijaitsevat Sallan kunnan
eteläosassa, Aholanvaaran kylän tuntumassa. Kalliovaaran ja kylän
välissä oleva Kalliojärvi on kuuluisan Oulankajoen (laskee Oulangan
kansallispuiston kautta Venäjän puolelle Paanajärveen)
järvilaajentuma ja siihen viimeisen jääkauden sulamisvedet ovat
purkautuneet Kalliovaaran rotkorinteitä pitkin samalla muodostaen
valtavia hiidenkirnuja. Näistä suurin, Juomalammeksi
sanottu, on tilavuudeltaan ja läpimitaltaan Suomen suurin ja kuuluu
myös maailman suurimpien hiidenkirnujen joukkoon. Sen suurin
läpimitta on 15.5 m ja syvyys 9 m. GTK:n 1996 tekemien tutkimusten
mukaan syvyys on voinut olla jopa 13 m, pohjalle on kerrostunut
useiden metrien kerros rapautunutta kalliota. Hiidenkirnuja on
kaikkiaan 4 kpl. Alueella on myös jylhiä kalliomaisemia, syviä
kalliorotkoja ja –muodostumia. Alueella hiidenkirnuista
hieman itään on myös Aholanvaaran kylän vanha tanssipaikka, jossa
on muinoin vietetty mm. juhannusjuhlia.
Alueen tiestö on
heikkokuntoisia metsäautoteitä, joten varovaisuutta on erityisesti
henkilöautolla ajettaessa syytä noudattaa. Retkeilypolut ovat osin
hyväkuntoisia ja osin pitkospuin varustettuja, mutta ovat paikoin
myös märkiä ja erityisesti sateella jopa vaarallisen liukkaita.
Varovaisuus on myös reitillä paikallaan. Tulipaikkoja (grillikota)
on reitin alussa (Valkeasilta) ja Kalliovaarassa, jossa myös
juomakelpoinen lähde.
Patikoinnin voi aloittaa joko
tästä Valkeasillan pisteestä, jolloin reitin kokonaispituus on n. 8
km tai sitten ajamalla Valkeasillalta 600 m eteenpäin, josta
vasempaan n. 2.5 km lähtöopasteelle. Lyhempi reitti
kokonaisuudessaan n. 3.2 km.
The hiking route of
Kalliovaara and its most significant attractions, huge giants
kettles, are located at the southern part of Salla, near
Aholanvaara village. The famous river, Oulanka, runs through the
lake Kalliojärvi between Kalliovaara and the village. Oulanka river
further runs through Oulanka National Park and finally pours out
its waters into lake Paanajärvi on the Russian side of the border.
At the final phases of the latest glacial period the smelting
waters from the glaciers formed huge rapids, which roared down the
ravines of Kalliovaara hill into Oulanka river. At the same time
the roaring waters with sand and stones in it have created huge
giant kettles into to cliffs. The biggest giant kettle, called
Juomalampi, is the biggest in Finland measured by the volume
and the inner diameter. It also is one of the biggest giant kettles
in the whole world. Its inner diameter is 15.5 m and depth at the
moment 9 m. The bottom has been covered during decades with stones
and sand and the Finnish researchers believe (1996), that the
original depth might be 13 m. There are 4 giant kettles in the
area. There are also beautiful panoramic views, robust cliffs and
cliff formations and deep ravines in between. Somewhat to the east
from the giant kettles there is an old dancing place of Aholanvaara
villagers, an open field in the woods where they have spent the
local summer festival, Midsummer festival.
The roads in the
area are not in a very good shape, so be careful when driving,
especially with an ordinary sedan. The hiking routes are partly in
good shape, partly covered with duckboards, in some places quite
wet and especially when it is raining, the routes can be
dangerously slippery. So be careful also when walking on the route.
Fireplaces (hut) you can find at the beginning of the route by
Valkeasilta and in Kalliovaara, where you can find also a spring of
drinkable water.
You can start
hiking either from this point, Valkeasilta, when the total length
of the route is app. 8 km. You can also drive further 600 m from
Valkeasilta, turn left and drive app. 2.5 km where you can find a
info table. The shorter route is app. 3.2 km.
