The Station Fire was devestating to Deukmejian Park and the surrounding areas.
All that survived were the picnic areas, the barn, and about 1/4 mile of wilderness up to the 100+ year-old oak tree.
The park reopened on 6.19.2010. Come see the destruction of the fire and the plants already starting to grow back. From the parking lot (no adventure pass needed), it's only about 1/4 of a mile walk on a dirt trail to the oak tree which the fire fighters intentionally protected. This is as far into the forest as you are permitted to hike. It's fascinating to see the burn area almost one year later. The cammo'd plastic container is under a geopile at the base of a burnt bush. Please re-hide the cache well under a pile of sticks.
As usual, look out for rattlesnakes, ticks, moutain lions, etc.
