Geocache Description:

Permission obtained from city manager via C.G.

Cache contents started with Boy Scout patches in it.

Reaching the rank of Eagle Scout in the Boy Scouts of America requires years of dedication and hard work. In addition to 21 required merit badges, each Scout must complete a project that . on average . requires 167 service hours. In 2008 alone, that translated to $16 million in service (based on the national volunteer hour value of $19.51).

This cache is part of a nationwide geocaching series called "Cache to Eagle". that showcases these special contributions.

Over its first 100 years, Scouting has provided millions of hours of service to communities across America. For our 100th Anniversary, we're celebrating that legacy with special service opportunities through, "A Year of Celebration, A Century of Making a Difference."

This cache will highlight one of the 12 points of the Scout Law, one of the 13 districts in the Heart of America Council, B.S.A. and an Eagle Scout project in the district.

A Scout is Courteous.

A Scout is polite to everyone regardless of age or position. He knows that using good manners makes it easier for people to get along.

The Twin Rivers District serves Anderson, Franklin, Linn, and Miami counties in Kansas. This includes the following communities: Bucyrus, Garnett, Greeley, Hillsdale, La Cygne, Louisburg, Mound City, Osawatomie, Ottawa, Parker, Paola, Pleasanton, Pomona, Princeton, Rantoul, Richmond, Wellsville, and Westphalia. Twin Rivers District and the Heart of America Council is dedicated to supporting the volunteer Scout leaders in the local Scout units as they provide the programs of the Boy Scouts of America to the youth of this area.

There are at least four Eagle Scout projects in the park.

1. A scout researched heritage flowers and vegetables to be planted around the John Brown cabin, cleaned out old flower beds and put up retaining walls.

2. At the other coordinates, a scout put in stones around the statue area and cleaned out the flower beds.

3. Across from the John Brown statue, a scout put in stone retaining walls and flower beds by the stairs.

4. Another scout built benches and put in landscaping around Memorial Hall.
