Elbow Island Park - Calgary Parks 100 Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

Three Stars: Checked the island today and GZ had 2 feet of sand built up by the flood in June. So if it didn't get washed away it is for sure buried now.

Geocache Description:

Calgary Parks 100 Project

PARKS 100 CELEBRATION

A partnership between the City of Calgary Parks, the Calgary Public Library and the Calgary Area Cachers to celebrate Calgary Parks 100th anniversary.

Calgary Parks has supplied cache containers and swag for 100 caches which have been placed in 100 parks around Calgary. You're looking for a small Lock'n'Lock. At the time of activation the cache contained a log book, pencil and sharpner, as well as three Trackables and some swag.

Background Information

An often overlooked destination--and among the only islands of consequence on the Elbow River--Elbow Island Park at the south end of Mission Bridge (4th Street and 26th Avenue) is a cool, lush oasis in a dense riverine forest. Marathon Realty donated the island to Calgarians for the city's 1975 centennial. The bulk of the park is located west of the bridge, with a small section to the east. The narrow paths are not easily reached or navigated by bicycle, wheelchairs or strollers; this is a walking park. Thick undergrowth makes exploring anything off the path difficult. The park has little more added to it than a few trash bins and benches, but it is home to a wide variety of trees, shrubs, flowers, birds, and, during damp summers, mosquitoes.
