Geocache Description:

A traditional cache located on the Pencaitland Railway Walk, at the Maltings

The Pencaitand Railway Walk follows the route formerly taken by the Gifford and Garvald Light Railway.
The line orginally opened in 1901 and used for both passenger and goods transport.  The line ran from a fork at Monktonhall where it connected to the main East Coast Line.
Contrary to it's name the line never quite made it Garvald, only stretching as far as Gifford.  There were stations at Ormiston (Macmerry on a seperate branch line), Pencaitland, Salton, Humbie and Gifford.
The primary goods transported on the line were agricultural produce, coal and the whiskey produced at Glenkinchie Distillery.

The large noisy cluster of buildings and silos next to the cache is a working Maltings.  This plant is operated by Bairds Malt and transports malted wheat across Scotland and to the rest of Europe.
