The bridge at Winston is noteworthy as a survivor of the great flood of 1771 and more recently for having a spitfire fly under it.

It was built as a link in the road system carrying coal from South Durham pits to North Yorkshire, but become less important with the coming of the railway.

It's a stone bridge soaring high over the Tees. Designed by Sir Thomas Robinson of nearby Rokeby, erected in 1763, it has one arch of 111 ft (34 metres) span, once the longest single span in England.

The Bridge was featured in a TV series called 'Piece of Cake' and was based on Derek Robinson's novel of the same name. It featured the men of the RAF's Hornet Squadron during the early days of the Second World War through to the Battle of Britain.

In the series a spitfire was flown under the bridge. The plane in this memorable piece of television was a Spitfire, first used in 1943 by 222 Squadron. A British pilot and spitfire enthusiast, Ray Hanna, bought the plane in 1983 for £260,000 and he performed the remarkable Winston Bridge stunt in 1988, at the age of 60, reaching a speed of 250mph.

Now for the cache.

There is parking layby parking both sides of the bridge. The path is quite rough and not suitable for wheelchairs.

The area can be very busy in the summer as a place to bring kids to paddle, so please be as discrete and stealthy as possible while searching.

There is heavy tree cover overhead so a look at the hint may be worthwhile.
